The importance of curation
The importance of curation 01 “I’m tough enough”
A lot of us are VERY online
A lot of us are VERY online For many of us, ignoring what’s happening on the internet is ignoring a very real dimension of life, and ignorance is not bliss.
Curating your online experience is a modern survival skill
Finding spaces that feel like a dinner conversation is a very tall order. Think about what relational foundations go into having quality dinner times. Curating your online experience is a modern survival skill
Embrace the Diversity Pt 1
Accept that people are always going to do things you don’t like or approve of (or even that you worry about). Also consider the 1% Theory in conjunction with the general understanding that a vast minority of fans actually create content or interact with each other at all. (@otdderamin on twitter with great insight on this here) Embrace the Diversity Pt 1
Embrace the Diversity Pt 2
Don't trust any community (whether it’s DW, LJ, Discord, Reddit, Mastodon, etc.) to have the same curation as you even when we're working on the same principles. All communities will probably host content or discussion that you don't condone. There are tools to help you further curate for yourself what a comm’s mods won’t.The flip side: small fandoms and their limited number of communities may be inadvertently (or deliberately, idk) suppressing fans with unpopular takes Embrace the Diversity Pt 2
Responsible Curation
Being mindful of your mental health: acknowledge you just sustained psychic damage for what you just saw or readandValuing your own time: you probably don’t actually want to get into an argument with the internet stranger that posted it Responsible Curation
Fans are Tool-Using Animals
Highly recommend watching Maciej Cegłowski give his talk ‘Fan is a Tool-Using Animal’ September 6, 2013. The transcript is here on his website too though. This talk was brilliant because even though the tools he created and mentions about in 2013 that fans utilized, he wasn’t wrong: much like we do with our fandoms, we find tools and rework them to fit our needs. Some interesting up & coming platforms include Pillowfort, Bobaboard, and Fanexus. I still love Dreamwidth a lot though, not gonna lie. Fans are Tool-Using Animals

Flipper! User manual introduction: Flipper is a tool that automates finding people with favourite lists similar to yours and creates a merged stream of fanfics from those lists ranked by how relevant they are to your tastes. Flipper also lets you filter that stream like a search engine and exclude fanfics/fandoms from search results permanently. It was created with a goal of “to see only stuff that might be interesting, and see it exactly once”To download, https://github.com/Zeks/flipper/releases To read more, Zeks posted about this software in r/HPFanfiction: https://redd.it/8xstw0 FFnet’s Unofficial Tools
